As you ascend from Seaford Beach into the Seaford Head Nature Reserve, remember to keep a safe distance from the cliff's edge. Chalk, though beautiful, is a fragile substance, and these cliffs have a tendency to crumble. Your path leads you to Hope Gap, where you can descend to the beach during low tide. Continue your pilgrimage to the tranquil haven of Cuckmere Beach, a perfect spot for a refreshing swim.
The trail unfolds with a series of soft ascents and descents as you journey from Cuckmere Haven to Birling Gap, a breathtaking stretch of the hike. Birling Gap also invites you to take a dip in its inviting waters. From here, follow the trail to the historic Belle Tout Lighthouse (above), and your path culminates at Beachy Head, where you can recharge at a nearby pub with indoor and outdoor seating.
As you continue your trek toward Eastbourne, take caution after rainfall, as the chalky terrain can become quite slippery when wet. Sturdy boots with ample grip are strongly recommended for this adventure. Although you could start at Exceat or Birling Gap, opting for the full stretch from Seaford to Eastbourne ensures you won't miss a moment of the coastline's splendor. Note. During high tide, you will have to detour (2.5-3km) to Cuckmere Inn, in order to cross the Cuckmere River (see image 1) safely via the bridge, or google map with the location.
Where to eat: Cuckmere Inn (beginning), Birling Gap Café (middle) and Beachy Head Inn (end of the hiking trip).
Travel: from London Victoria to Seaford, you'll need to catch a train with a transfer at Lewes. The entire journey typically takes around 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Car: If you're departing from Brighton, the drive to Seaford should take approximately 35 minutes.
Coming from London, anticipate a drive lasting approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach Seaford.
You can enjoy up to 12 hours of complimentary parking at the Seaford Esplanade car park. Additional parking options in Seaford are available, but they operate on a pay-and-display basis.
