ALBERT OEHLEN New Paintings at Gagosian London

March 21–May 11, 2024

Gagosian unveils a mesmerizing journey through the enigmatic realm of Albert Oehlen's newest creations. Stepping into his London gallery for the first time since 2016, Oehlen invites viewers to embark on an exploration of the boundless horizons of painting's future. With a virtuosic flourish, he transforms fragments, forms, and motifs from the recesses of his imagination into a symphony of visual resonance, akin to the sampling techniques of a masterful composer or the cinematic narrative weaving of a seasoned director.

In Oehlen's hands, images undergo a metamorphosis, divided, repeated, and distorted to forge a new lexicon of pictorial storytelling. Here, the original source becomes a fleeting specter, sometimes decipherable, often obliterated, as the artist transcends the mere representation of subject matter. What emerges is a captivating dance between order and chaos, as compositions oscillate between structured repetition and unpredictable divergence. There exists no rigid boundary between abstraction and figuration, improvisation and control; rather, Oehlen revels in the fluidity of artistic expression, embracing the infinite possibilities inherent within the medium.

Central to Oehlen's oeuvre is his audacious dismantling of the conventions of modernism, a daring act of rebellion against the sanctity of stable forms and prescribed meanings. Embracing the ethos of "bad" painting with fervor, he imbues his canvases with an irreverent spirit, infusing spontaneous gestures with the surrealistic fervor of dreamscapes. Through a kaleidoscope of graphic brushstrokes, painterly drips, and a cacophony of unexpected colors and textures, Oehlen challenges the very essence of coherence and legibility, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the tantalizing ambiguity of his artistic vision.

Contemporary Art of Transylvania

Marking our forth anniversary, we embark on a journey back to our origins, drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of our homeland. Transylvania, once a beacon of independence, has evolved into a vibrant mosaic of cultures, a convergence of identities spanning centuries.

Our latest collection pays homage to this diversity, celebrating the fusion of Saxons, Hungarians, Romanians, Szekely, Ashkenazi Jews, Armenians, and the Romani people.

Through our art, we weave together threads of heritage and contemporary expression, honoring the spirit of inclusivity and cultural exchange that defines our cherished land.
