Ted Pim, Never Odd or Even at Almine Rech London

Apr 11 — May 18, 2024 | London

Mirrors, long imbued with mythological significance, serve as portals to other realms, as seen in various cultural traditions from Irish wakes to fairy tales like 'Snow White.' Ted Pim's exhibition, Never Odd or Even, delves into the theme of transformation, utilizing mirror imagery as a central motif. Through repurposing fragments of Old Masters paintings and juxtaposing them with elements from fashion magazines and Irish mythology, Pim explores the cyclical nature of existence and the perpetual transformation of history.

His paintings capture moments of metamorphosis, where past and present selves coalesce, depicted through kaleidoscopic arches and ambiguous movements. References to Irish myths, such as 'The Children of Lir,' intertwine with swan-like figures, blurring the boundaries between human and animal forms. Pim's intricate technique emphasizes the tangible beauty of his subjects, drawing parallels between the opulence of historical paintings and the aspirational allure of fashion magazines.

By decontextualizing and duplicating imagery, Pim subverts the original meanings of his source material, infusing it with new significance rooted in familial and collective histories of Ireland. Nostalgia permeates the exhibition, as Pim recycles imagery from his childhood and familial experiences, weaving a narrative that transcends time and class boundaries.

Through his reinterpretation of works like Antonio Verrio's 'Sea of Triumph,' Pim challenges established power dynamics within art, reclaiming narratives to tell his own story. By wearing the metaphorical garment of mythological paintings, Pim transforms them into vessels of personal and cultural significance, reflecting the ongoing cycle of history repeating and transforming across generations.
