Missing Figures by Gioele Amaro masterfully explores themes of absence and presence through a contemporary lens. The exhibition's premise—that viewers always arrive too late—creates an intriguing tension, as Byzantine-inspired domed structures glow with the auras of figures just departed. This focus on luminous gradients over missing subjects invites contemplation of what truly matters in these religious scenes.
Amaro's use of digital mediums, including software, stylus pens, and AI, challenges traditional notions of art-making. The digital halo in Waiting, reminiscent of a loading icon, cleverly comments on our technologically driven expectations and the fluid nature of identity in the digital age. By questioning the fetishization of the artist and their tools, Amaro encourages a reevaluation of the artist's role today.
The exhibition blurs the line between organic and artificial. Digital watercolor paintings show ink seemingly melting into paper, while AI collaboration produces patterns with dynamic spontaneity. Vaping, where digital paint splatters due to an AI misinterpretation, highlights the creative potential of embracing errors and randomness.
