FRANK AT 90 at Hauser & Wirth London

13 Feb - 16 Mar 2024

Celebrate Sir Frank Bowling's 90th birthday with a special show at Hauser & Wirth London, featuring two big artworks from 1973 and 2023–2024, on display until March 16, 2024. One of the paintings, 'Hello Rosa New York,' was created in 1973 in his SoHo studio, inspired by American art historian Barbara Rose. It marks a shift in Bowling's style, focusing more on color and moving towards pure color-field painting.

During the early 1970s, Bowling noticed long lines on his canvases from his studio floorboards. This 'found geometry' influenced his work, giving it an organic structure. 'Hello Rosa New York' captures his evolving approach to color and form during this crucial period. Responding to this historical piece, Bowling created 'Thanks to Water' (2023–24), one of his largest works. Water, a consistent inspiration, played a role in the creation process, with Bowling soaking the canvas, applying washes of pink and gold paints, and adding a glitter mixture for a shimmering effect.

Both paintings showcase Bowling's exploration of light, color, and geometry, demonstrating his ongoing fascination with the possibilities of his medium. Alongside the exhibition, there's a learning program with talks and discussions, including one on February 23 for students featuring Susi Sahmland and Professor Dorothy Price. On March 16, an interactive afternoon for students and young art enthusiasts will explore Frank Bowling’s presentation with Susi Sahmland, artist Rohan Ayinde, and curator Beatriz Lobo Britto.

You can also see Bowling's works at the Royal Academy of Arts until April 28, as part of the Entangled Pasts, 1768–now exhibition, and at the South London Gallery, showcasing 'Skid' on February 18, accompanied by a talk from Ben Bowling, Frank Bowling’s son and manager of the Frank Bowling Studio.
