Emigrating to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998, Sherpa's creativity blossomed under new influences, resulting in a unique fusion of his traditional upbringing with contemporary perspectives.

Venturing beyond the familiar realms of Tibetan art, Tsherin Sherpa emerges as a trailblazing contemporary artist. The Different Worlds exhibition unfolds his captivating journey of transformation, challenging established norms while weaving a narrative that transcends cultural boundaries. Born in 1968 in Kathmandu, Nepal, Sherpa inherited the intricate art of Thangka painting from his father. While rooted in tradition, he felt compelled to infuse his own identity into the canvas.
The result is a mesmerizing blend of traditional techniques and avant-garde themes showcased in the "Different Worlds" exhibition, an exploration of Sherpa's artistic evolution. His Californian sojourn in his late twenties opened new doors to experimentation. Collage, sculpture, and installation became his artistic companions as he grappled with the complexities of displacement, identity, and globalization, echoing the struggles faced by many Tibetans in exile.
Sherpa dismantled and reconstructed elements from Thangka painting, breathing new life into symbols like the lotus, mandala, and Buddha, crafting fresh compositions with profound meanings. Sherpa's creations serve as both homage and critique to Tibetan culture. Embracing the spiritual richness of his Himalayan heritage, he simultaneously challenges prevailing stereotypes and misconceptions. Through his art, Sherpa invites viewers to delve beneath the surface, engaging with the intricate tapestry of Tibetan art and identity.
The "Different Worlds" exhibition, running from January 11 to February 17, 2024, at the Grand Palais Immersif in Paris, unveils Sherpa's artistic odyssey. Over 50 works, spanning two decades, including paintings, sculptures, installations, and new commissions, offer a rare glimpse into his transformative journey. The exhibition also features the documentary film "Above and Below: The Art of Tsherin Sherpa," providing insight into the artist's life in Nepal and the US.

Widely acclaimed as a luminary in contemporary Tibetan art, Sherpa has exhibited in esteemed venues globally, from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to the Rubin Museum of Art and the Almine Rech Gallery. Currently dividing his time between Kathmandu and Northern California, Sherpa's artistic legacy continues to resonate on an international stage.
