Art Basel Miami Beach returned this year with fresh leadership and an expanded array of galleries spanning five continents. Directed by the newly appointed Bridget Finn, the 2023 edition was a truly international exhibit of modern and contemporary art, boasting 227 galleries from 33 countries. Among them, 24 new exhibitors joined the fray, showcasing an augmented presence of Latin American galleries, including representatives from Puerto Rico, Argentina, Colombia, Guatemala, Peru, and Uruguay.
Notably, South Florida-based galleries are contributing more significantly than in recent years. Standout features encompass a solo exhibit featuring works by Surrealist artist Leonor Fini, inclusive of theatre set designs and masquerade masks, jointly presented by Galerie Minsky from Paris and Weinstein Gallery from San Francisco.
Positions
Dedicated to young galleries, the Positions section at the fair offers a platform to explore creations by emerging artists globally. Noteworthy showcases include a sculptural installation by Brazilian artist Mano Penalva, creatively riffing on the beaded car seat cover, presented by Mexico City's Llano gallery. Additionally, a project by Brazilian artist Allan Weber, represented by São Paulo gallery Galatea (a newcomer to the fair), adds another layer of intrigue to this vibrant section.
Exhibition Insights
Delving into the rich tapestry of artistic history, the Exhibition Insights section spotlights noteworthy practices. This year's focal point is was a homage to the influential artist Liliana Maresca, a pivotal figure in 1980s and '90s Argentina, skillfully presented by the Buenos Aires-based gallery Rolf Art. Meanwhile, Louis Stern Fine Arts offered a comprehensive survey spanning from the 1950s to the 2010s, showcasing paintings and sculptures by Ynez Johnston, with a notable piece being Untitled (1975; depicted).
Contemporary Showcases
In the vibrant Nova section, dedicated to artworks crafted within the last three years, London gallery Emalin took the spotlight. Their presentation featured abstract paintings by Kate Spencer Stewart, thoughtfully paired with screen-based creations by digital artist Özgür Kar. Known for animated drawings infused with cartoonish macabre imagery, Kar's piece "Noctur - Death by the Pond" (2023; depicted) introduced a Narcissus-like skeleton, adding a captivating dimension to the contemporary narrative.
